Recall

Randomly throughout the day practice calling him to you using his name + a recall cue like ‘Freeman come’ or whatever you normally use, and give him the Yes and the treat when he gets to you. Remember to only call him once. Make some sounds or clap your hands to get his attention if he doesn’t respond to you calling him the first time. If after that, he gets distracted or doesn’t come to you for any reason, then walk up to him and place a treat in front of his nose and lead him back to the spot you called him from, and then give him a Yes and the treat.

Start with easy recalls and progress to more difficult ones like calling him when he’s distracted, or from a different room, or practicing this outside(on leash). As he gets better, increase the distance he has to travel to get to you. If he is doing well, start hiding just out of sight and calling him, he will love this game! As he gets better, start hiding in places that are more difficult for him to find you. Have fun with this! Make a big deal and celebrate when he finds you!

Action Step

Choose 2 of the behaviors covered above, and train with your dog for 5 minutes.

Building Better

Relationships

through Communication, Understanding and Trust
Seek first to understand, then to be understood.
Stephen Covey

What We're About

Positive training focused on learning how to genuinely communicate with your dog in a way they understand.
Learning how to communicate with your dog properly is a key component of successful dog training.  Its important to first learn how to read your dogs body language and what they're communicating  to us, THEN we can teach them how to understand our language and what we want to communicate to them.  We're here to help you through this process.

What is science-based dog training?

Training based on the study of the dog, it’s behaviors, and how it learns.
Positive, force free, humane training techniques utilizing science-based learning theories which foster trust and build positive human-animal relationships.

Testimonials

Kate & Lola

Eric has proven to be an absolutely wonderful trainer for our our German Shepard puppy, Lola. Since 7 weeks old, Eric has been training Lola AND my family. Our family has learned how to work as a team to train and communicating with Lola.

Eric is extremely knowledgeable, patient and communicative in guiding us on where we can continue to improve in marking and developing the desired behaviors with Lola.

Each training session is positive and effective. I witnessed Lola’s immediate compliance and willingness to please using the right rewards. I highly recommend Pawsitive Academy for all your training needs. (I wish he trained toddlers too!).
